Called Zen in Japanese, Ch’an refers to the religious discipline aimed at tranquilizing the mind and getting the practitioner to devote himself to a quiet introspection into his own inner consciousness. He is made to feel an interest in things above the senses and to discover the presence of a spiritual faculty that bridges the gap between the finite and the infinite. When he is thoroughly disciplined, he can keep a serenity of mind and cheerfulness of disposition even amid the world of turbulent activity. – Venerable Master Hsing Yun
